FAQs

Fabricating with MicroGuard™

In developing structurally strong MicroGuard antimicrobial copper alloys, we quickly determined that we would need a total manufacturing approach to meet the needs of our customers and supply chain partners. When cleaned regularly, EPA registered MicroGuard alloys kill 99.9% of infectious bacteria* within two hours of exposure. The EPA registered MicroGuard alloys for use in over 100 touch surface products.

For OEMs and other fabricators, PMX will provide assistance that enables our fabricating partners to produce MicroGuard touch surface products without affecting the antimicrobial properties of the material. MicroGuard copper cannot be painted, waxed, varnished, or coated in any way to ensure antibacterial efficacy meets our EPA registered public health claim. Review our frequently asked questions for more information.

MicroGuard antimicrobial copper alloys offer product developers a unique combination of properties that many other metals cannot match. Download the MicroGuard Antimicrobial Copper Alloy Guide for more technical information. MicroGuard alloys are durable, highly ductile, malleable, and offer outstanding machinability. Available in strip, coil, sheet, plate, tube and casting forms, MicroGuard alloys can be machined, MIG welded, TIG welded, resistance welded, cast, formed and brazed. Stronger than aluminum, MicroGuard can replace stainless steel in many hardware and touch surface applications. .

Developing engineered antimicrobial copper alloys to provide optimum physical and mechanical properties is a complex process that requires a continuing dialogue between our customers, our metallurgists and our technical staff. During the research and development process, we found that ensuring consistent antimicrobial performance from production to point-of-use requires properly managing the use of stamping oils, degreasing agents, and buffing compounds to ensure efficacy is not adulterated during the manufacturing process.

During our entire production process, our operations are governed by our ISO 9001: 2015 quality management system. Our approach focuses on careful planning and design, a state-of-the-art rolling mill, and good laboratory practices supported by our expertise in fabrication, forming, and drawing. We will review your specifications and help you select the best MicroGuard alloy to enhance your fabricated product. We will work with you to increase production rates, reduce costs, and to develop high-quality MicroGuard touch surface products.

*Testing demonstrates effective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE).
